Fall prevention

As we get older, our risk of falling increases. About one in every three people aged 65 and up falls at least once a year. Of the elderly people who fall, 10% suffers of injuries like a broken hip. People who are afraid of falling often become less and less active. This might lead to loneliness.

Causes

Falling has multiple causes. Sometimes the person who falls brings about their own fall, sometimes it is their surroundings. Elderly people can suffer from dizziness, reduced eyesight or reduced muscle power, which causes them to not stand as firmly. Urine incontinence may also be a cause of falling; making people want to go to the lavatory quickly. Dangers in someone’s surroundings could include bad lighting, high thresholds, loose rugs or a low sofa. We cannot prevent every fall but it is possible to take measures to heavily decrease the risk of falling.

Results

Both falling and fear of falling can have major consequences for the way people live their daily lives. Doing groceries independently, gardening or doing other hobbies are all activities that can be compromised by falling or fear of falling. We will map out your risk of falling by means of a personal interview and a few short tests. You will then receive advice on what you can do to prevent falling.
